Brzica Winery

Brzica Winery has been operating since 2000 in Erdut, a village on the easternmost edge of Croatia where the Danube River carves a dramatic meander through the Slavonian plain. The estate sits on the Busija site — six hectares of vineyards at 160 meters elevation, directly above the 1,378th kilometer of the Danube's course.

The position is everything. The vineyards lie on a Danube meander roughly twelve kilometers long and five wide. The northern wind protects the vines from winter freeze and dries the leaves quickly after summer rain. The region enjoys more than 250 sunny days per year. And the soil — loess, a delicate mixture of clay and sand laid down by glacial winds over millennia — is exceptionally suited to grape cultivation.

"What sets Brzica apart is patience. Sixty-five percent of our production is red wine, all of it barrel-aged. Nothing is released until it has spent at least four years in the cellar — including twelve months of bottle maturation."

Across those six hectares, 28,000 vines are planted with one-third dedicated to white varieties — Graševina and Chardonnay — and two-thirds to reds: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Vranac. The presence of Vranac is itself a quiet act of defiance. Native to the southern Adriatic, it is rare to find this powerful, tannic variety planted in continental Croatia. At Brzica, it serves as the soulful backbone of the estate's flagship blend, Cuvée Rendezvous.

The winery is modernly equipped for controlled fermentation, with a working cellar of oak barrels for aging the reds. The whites are fresh and direct; the reds are slow, structured, and unhurried — meant to be opened years after most wines have been forgotten.
