An Istrian story of red soil, sea air, and the quiet conviction that the vine should be allowed to speak for itself. Twelve hectares of organic vineyards in the far south of the peninsula, steps from the Adriatic.
Istria reveals itself slowly. To anyone willing to look, the peninsula offers proof — daily — that it was made to give the very best of what nature can provide. Positioned along the same latitude as some of the world's most celebrated wine regions, Istria has every advantage a winemaker could ask for. Bruno and Irena Trapan founded their estate to take that gift seriously.
The vineyards lie at the Ćuf site in Šišan, a village in the far south of the peninsula near Pula. Twelve hectares of Istrian red soil — the iconic terra rossa, rich in iron, minerals, and fragments of limestone — stretch across a south-southwest exposure, kissed all day by the sun and ventilated by the breath of the Adriatic just a few kilometers away.
"We are committed to organic production. Our work is to preserve the authenticity and natural character that the vine so generously offers."
Among the white varieties, Malvasia takes pride of place — Istria's signature grape, capable of expressing both sea-spray salinity and ripe Mediterranean stone fruit when grown with care. A smaller portion of the estate is dedicated to Chardonnay. In reds, Teran leads — an indigenous variety with immense untapped potential, deeply tied to Istrian identity. Alongside it grow Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah, whose aromatic expression is amplified by the mineral-rich soil and the proximity of the sea, making them ideal building blocks for cuvées unique to this corner of Istria.
The winemaking philosophy is intentionally restrained. Wild-yeast fermentations. Aging on lees in acacia and oak barriques. Wines bottled unfiltered, with the natural sediment a sign of life rather than a flaw. The flagship Malvasia, Uroboros, has been rated above 90 points consistently since 2016. The Teran-based Terra Mare is described as a true dark horse of Istrian winemaking — and tastes like it.
As Bruno is fond of saying: as we journey through the vast world of wine, we come to realize that the glistening grapes are the true witnesses to the story. Their juice is a precious delight for eternal hedonists. The mark this work leaves on the map of nature is one that stays.
